Opihi College Trip to Japan 2008

Japanese Language Study Trip
Timaru District - Eniwa, Hokkaido Sister City Homestay and School Visit

Nicole Campbell, Hamish Cartwright, Alana Cochrane, Ashlee Dolamore, Jacinta Fraser, Bethia Hansen, Elaine Pou-Pickering, Josh Sands, Daniel Starky, Anthony Yeandle and teachers Eric Lindblom and Mary Cumming travelled to Japan for a three week language study trip. Their journey began with a one week rail adventure in the south of Japan and travel to cultural highlights in Tokyo, Mt Fuji, Hiroshima and Kyoto. After a week of Japanese life on the road they headed up to Hokkaido in the far north where they experienced a two week homestay and school visit in the Timaru District’s sister city, Eniwa, Hokkaido. Students attended the regular classes of a high school in Eniwa as well as additional classes in Japanese language study. Close bonds were forged between the students and their host families and on the final day at the airport there were many tears and promises to visit again in the future.

We are very grateful to our sponsors, Asia New Zealand Foundation and Sasakawa Fellowship Fund for Japanese Language Education. And a huge thank you to the Temuka community who generously supported our many fundraising activities.
